Preventing crimes is only part of my job duties as a police officer. As the violence escalates each year, the trouble my team of officers has is that we simply can not add more to the team to stay ahead of the trouble, and in most jails, cutbacks are reducing the size of the crews who are assigned to keep the peace in facilities that are becoming more dangerous by the year. This means officers need to rely on technology to help reduce violence in the city, and that is exactly what happened this year when we discovered the power of teaming with Securus Technologies.
The supervisors at the state prison began working with Securus Technologies this year when violence towards corrections officers was out of control. The company installed their inmate telephone monitor which gave the staff the ability to be on the ground while a software now scanned every call made on the jail phones. The LBS software would alert officers when things like drugs, violence, or weapons, were being discussed on those phones. Little did we realize at that time how crucial that phone system would be in my teams efforts to prevent crimes on the street.
Securus Technologies is currently based out of Texas, has over one thousand employees, and their team works by a code of conduct where they strive to make the world a safer place for all. To give you an example of how this monitoring system works outside the jail, an inmate was talking about a fugitive we were hunting. The alert came out so we did a stakeout of the callers residence for a few days, and early one morning our suspect walked out the front door and right into our team before he had any chance to commit any more crimes.
